Director’s Welcome

Hello, and welcome to the Chesapeake High School Instrumental Music Program!  Please peruse this website at your leisure to learn more about who we are and what we do for the students enrolled in our programs.  We offer our students a wide array of musical opportunities at CHS, including Symphonic Band, String Orchestra, Concert Band, and Jazz Band.

Since I began my time as Director of Bands & Orchestras at CHS, it has been my goal to instill in our students a passion for music and a thirst for excellence.  Students enrolled in our programs learn skills in teamwork, perseverance, patience, and dedication that transcend far beyond the concert hall and become applicable to their daily lives.

My favorite thing as Director is to see the students grow every year.  When they learn a new skill on their instrument, master a challenging passage of music, perfectly execute a complex rhythm, or perform with emotion and beauty, it offers me the greatest satisfaction in seeing them develop into fine young musicians.

Even more powerful, though, is that I get to see them grow into fine young men and women.  We have awesome students at CHS, and I am grateful that I get to have a part in shaping them into future citizens of our ever-evolving global society.

Mr. Clay Michalec joined the Chesapeake High School band family in 2015 as the Band Director. Since his arrival, the CHS band and instrumental music programs have excelled in their music education studies, including Symphonic Band, String Orchestra, Jazz Band and Marching Band.

Originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Mr. Michalec has been teaching in Anne Arundel County since 2011. His first position was as the director of Bands & Orchestras at Old Mill Middle School North in Millersville, Maryland.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education and a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Trumpet Performance from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania.  He also holds a Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from Messiah College in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. In addition to his responsibilities with Chesapeake High School, Mr. Michalec also conducts private trumpet lessons and performs, on trumpet, with the Category 5 Wind Ensemble based in Laurel, Maryland.
